Mr. Oles - 8N Science

About Me

This will be my second year teaching at Red Lion.  Prior to teaching here, I taught for 9 years at Northern York Middle School, and for 8 years in Baltimore City.  I am a born and raised "Yorker".  I was a Red Lion student myself a long time ago.  I have my undergrad in Sport and Exercise Science from Messiah University and my master's degree in education from Johns Hopkins University.  I enjoy all things outdoors, sports, cooking, and DIY projects.
What do you need?

You don't need too many physical things for science class.  Your computer will be essential.  It would also be beneficial to have some way to organize your paperwork such as a 3-ring binder or folder of some sort and obviously you will need something to write with in class.  The hardest things to bring aren't ones that you can buy.

#1 - A positive mindset
Come in to each class with the idea that you are going to enjoy yourself and learn something new.  I will try my very best to help you with this but there will be some days where you won't and that is ok.  This is the hardest thing to bring to class but the most important thing to master.

#2 - Consideration for others
Everybody in your class has a story that you don't know about.  Treat everybody with respect and kindness.  Celebrate the differences that we have instead of turning them into conflict and be respectful of your fellow classmates.  Even if you aren't enjoying a particular lesson, be quiet and considerate of those who are.

#3 - Self-Discipline
Pay attention in class, keep up with the work, be a good partner, and turn in your assignments on time.  These are all topics that fall under the heading of self-discipline.  Plan ahead for the things that you need to accomplish and structure each day to move forward with those goals.  If you don't, they will pile up and it will seem almost impossible to achieve them.  You have enough work time during the school day that, if you are disciplined, there should not be a lot of work to take home each night.  If you talk and play games during that time, you will have more to do at home.
